QUESTIONS: Answer TWO of the following...

Q1: Van Meter writes, “There’s no such thing as living in the moment anymore. Thanks to social media, every event, from the Super Bowl to the State of the Union, from the Olympics to your best friend’s wedding, now happens in real time and “real” time” (373). What does he mean by using real time once in quotes and once without? What are the two kinds of “real” he’s referring to, and why might our constant need to document life create a “real” inside the real?

Q2: Why do modeling agencies now demand that models have Twitter and Instagram accounts? Why do models now have to be more than models, but actual brands, tweeting and revealing their lives?

Q3: Discussing her presence on social media, Kate Upton said, “People think I am an expert on social media, but I am still trying to figure it out, too. How much do you want to put yourself out there?...Well, I am out there. There’s no turning back for me” (368). How do you think she means this statement? Does she feel she’s gone “too far”? What consequences might there be for a model who becomes too successful and too visible on social media?  How might this relate to Amanda Hess’ article?

Q4: The Chinese supermodel Liu Wen explains that “Chinese people have a word. We say, Not you happy—you have to make everyone happy. To share the happy. That is very important” (370). How might this statement represent not only the modeling/advertising world, but also the internet in general? How can a single person’s social media be about making “everyone happy”?

  1. Vocabulary
    1. Counterintuitive-counter to what intuition would lead one to expect:

    Questions:
Q2. I believe we so often dehumanize models and many other famous people. It is almost as if they are fake characters on television. We think “no one could ever be that skinny or beautiful, so we look at them and almost believe they walked out of a factory. But if we can see them as normal people with likes and dislikes it shows us that they are real people with feelings.
Q3. Of course there can always be consequences once you sign into social media. I do not believe that Upton is saying she regrets the things she has done on social media, but more so saying that she always must be mindful of what she does and posts. If these models actually go “too far” they could lose followers, social status, and even their jobs. This could relate to Hess’ article by these women because these women could be shamed for what they do. People can be relentless online no matter if you are stating your opinion or wearing an outfit they don’t like.

    1. Great responses...I agree with your point about making them real people, and not just abstract ideas of sex or beauty. But do we have the right to demand that famous people share their lives with us? Is that simply the price of fame on the internet? Or is it a way of controlling the space people--and women--move in? Do we demand the same scrutiny of men who are famous?

    Questions
    2. Modeling agencies now demand their models to be on social media because social media has become the modern day equivalent to magazines. The time of the print magazine will soon come to an end, and modeling agencies realize this just as much as anyone else. Models now have to present themselves as a brand because we have access to them three hundred sixty-five days a year thanks to social media. We are a society that craves information at the push of a button, and we demand nothing less from our models.
    4. Liu Wen’s statement represents the internet as a whole because that in essence is what the internet is about; making other people happy. We see it from every aspect of the web; Tai Lopez is one of the most popular people on social media because he dedicates everything he has into helping others improve themselves. The modeling industry is an industry that is primarily meant to make people happy. We as a culture love seeing beautiful women in exhilarating clothing, and modeling gives us an excellent mean to do that!

  3. Great responses...but what do you think about forcing a model, or any celebrity, to open their lives 24/7 to their public? That makes them a vagabond (to use Hess' term) and all of our tourists, endlessly gawking at their lives, and leaving them no where to hide. Is this endless voyeurism a form of prostitution? Should a model, actress, singer, writer, artist, politician have to display their lives so intimately for the world? And do the same rules apply equally for men and women?

    1. Van Meter is referring to how we record anything special that happens we record it to save for later ie real time and "real" time. I personally do not do this just because I don't care for recording and saving things but some people are and they aren't really focusing on whats happening, they are just focusing on recording to have for later.
    3. Kate Upton said shes too far into social media and there's no turning back, as someone with that type of fame you really cant turn back after you put yourself out there so much. This also makes her a target where anything can be thrown at her and she has little she can do about it, and with how dangerous social media can be, if she does one wrong thing she could have the possibility of losing her job.

2- Modeling agencies are all about money and image. They want their models to "get out there", to greater their image. What greater way to do that than social media. They want there bodyacious models to be out there more to get more viewers. Which in turn makes them "brands", making the company more money.
    3. When Kate Upton says "She's out there", she's saying she has already exposed to much to the public. What gets posted online stays there. She thinks she has gone to far with social media and the people only want more. The more of your life you share online, the more people want. in relation to Amanda Hess' article, it turns the public into voyeurists who always want more.
